Once in a Life Time you find the best food for your pet

Pineapple, good for your dog

In "Dog World" Jane Liley has a column, called: "Living with dogs".

In this column no complex commotion, but the little everyday things of living with dogs. Readers can write about  their experiences, worries and questions in this column. A large part of the letters to the editor concerns skin - and fur problems, fodder, pets with appetite problems, diseases,  inconveniences, and all kinds of domestic hints.

It’s remarkable that a large number of letters concerns pets suffering from indigestion. The column is a kind of informal chatterbox. And by reading, it seems to be much the same in the United Kingdom as well as with us. I know that it doesn’t only happen to my dogs, but except for two, my dogs are very crazy about the excrements of their tribe.

For this reason one of the hints drew my attention. Jane had got a tip. Someone told her to give the dogs a slice of  pineapple to put an end to this nasty habit. Several people, who had tried this for some time, wrote that they benefited from doing so. Someone told that his dog 12 years of age, had done so his entire life and had already stopped after 2 days. A half slice a day appeared sufficient. It didn’t matter if the pineapple was fresh or from a tin.

Why not tried?

Pay pineapple in a tin is affordable and if the dogs don’t like it, we can still eat it. The result was showing within 2 or 3 days. Two dogs only looked at the excrements and walked away. Two others had lost any interest and the fifth dog considered the pineapple as a welcome dessert and is still eating excrements. Two dogs, not having this nasty habit, are also fed with a slice a day from a social point of view.

What did I give them?

For a complete week one slice a day and then two weeks no slice at all.

Then again a slice a day for one week and then again no slice at all.

If the dogs lapsed into their nasty habits after some time, the pineapple recipe was started up again. Home preserved pineappledoesn’t make any difference.

What can be the reason of pineapple having this effect?

It’s well-known that pineapple contains the vitamins A, B1, C and Bromeline (an enzyme that nowadays is used in medication against indigestion). This could be the explanation.
